Darkness to the intellect; sunshine to the heart.

"That God can be known by the soul in tender experience while remaining infinitely aloof from the curious eyes of reason constitutes a paradox best described as

Darkness to the intellect
But sunshine to the heart."

- Frederick W. Faber

“Let us supposed that all the whole world and most refined conceptions of the wisest intellects can tell her nothing, and that the goodness and beauty of her Beloved infinitely surpass all their knowledge, being persuaded that all creatures are too rude to inform her and to conduct her to the true knowledge of God. . . . She ought then to go forward with her love, leaving all her understanding behind. Let her love God as He is in Himself, and not as her imagination says He is, and pictures Him.”

- Knowledge of the Holy, A.W. Tozer

Father, you have never been more beautiful than today. Today, I found myself surrounded, in awe and wonder of Your beauty. In awe and wonder of Your majesty.

You are Holy. High and lifted up. Worthy of all my praise. Thank you for a day that surpasses reason or understanding, but is known in the sunshine of my heart.

Thank you for the countless ways you reveal yourself, for all the ways you desire to be known. I give you my heart and my life again. I surrender it all to You, my loving God. May my heart beat to praise you.

His hand restores, His love makes new

You came through for me yet again.
You alone are faithful.
You are My God, my Deliverer.

The One who gives me strength.
Mighty to save.

The One who meets me in the places others cannot see or go.

The One who calms all my fears.

Gently lays my head upon His shoulder to rest.
The One who comforts me.
Strengthens me in my innermost being.

Gives me peace, where I feel chaos.

Gives me security, where I feel doubt.

Yes, you are my God. Yes, you alone are God.
The One who meets and dwells in my heart.
Who speaks to me tenderly and passionately. In a voice none other can match.

Thank you for loving me today and washing away my fears. And placing me safe in you.

Your hand restores, Your love makes new
...

Words straight from my Father's heart to mine today:

"So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

All power, honor and glory belong to You. Forever and ever. Amen

rejoice, pt. II: the god who sees me

So, I don't do this very often, but tonight I was looking back at old blog posts as today I have been reflecting on how different life looks now from what it was just a few months ago. It is creepy that I found a post written two and a half months ago that once again captures my exact heart cry today: you are the God who sees me. The one who reminds me that I am never alone.

Yet this time, the cry of my heart came from a much different place. This was on the other side of all that I feared and knew I was about to begin, this time, today, it was the heart cry of a rejoicing heart. Of a heart that saw and recognized that God was with her and that you are the God who sees me.

"Yet in this we greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials..." 1 Peter 1:6

Today was profound in a number of ways. I cannot explain all that happened or how God started leading me into this time of celebration of all that has happened in my relationship with Him, but the last year has been a journey with God that has ultimately changed my life and how I relate to Him. How I see Him. He has given me His grace to experience Him in new ways, He has never been more real than ever and He has given me newness in my relationship with Him, pushing me into greater depths of His heart and revealing more of who He is and how much more there is to know and discover about Him. Strangely, in this process, I come home to myself and become more of myself. More loved, more known. Seen. Held. Received.

You are the God who sees me. Looking back at the start of what I knew would be an intense period, as during the week this post was written, first week of August, when I had just moved into my house and was in the most intense week of my grieving process, when everything looked and felt strange, where I didn't know if I was going to make it through, You were there. Reminding me that You would walk this out with me. Now two and a half months later, I am able to rejoice and look at all You have done, all the newness you would bring in the midst of my grief, all that You were waiting to provide, all that you knew was just around the corner. You knew the treasures that would be hidden in the darkness. You knew the gifts You had in store, as I faced the unknown. You are faithful. You were preparing me for this time. And reminding me, you always hear my cry. Thank you.

"In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed." 1 Peter 1:6-7

These trials have come why? So that my faith, which is of greater worth than gold, the most precious thing in my life, may be proved real. You have strengthened and increased my faith. You have brought me through and in this, I rejoice. The this means the trials are not over and the grief has not ended, but it means that even in the midst, we can rejoice.

Post below written Wednesday August 5, 2009:

You are the God who sees me.
The one who reminds me that I am never alone.

The one whose voice breaks through even the deepest of heartaches, the fiercest of storms, and the most dense morning fog that only muddles the confusion,

You are the God who sees me.

Who reminds me that I am seen. And I am known.
A truth I can only hear in the silence.
Tucked away.
Far from the noise of all that surrounds me.

A truth I can only hear from your heart to mine.

That though I feel abandoned and alone, that I am seen.
That though I feel unknown and unwanted, I am known and wanted.
That though I feel unlovable, I am loved.

These truths broke through my heart's search on Saturday. During a wilderness retreat for women at our church. It couldn't have come at a more perfect time.

It was the most perfect of storms.
I was in the midst of a move, signaling a transition of support systems and houses, of what once was, to what will be, of ushering in change, whether I was ready or not.
My heart was unsettled. And I felt more alone than ever.

But it was a strange feeling. I knew I would be okay, I just wanted to know how long this void would last. How long this season would be of not having the relationships again that I had just lost.

But in those moments in silence, after taking about an hour to first allow Him to quiet my soul,

I found those words being whispered to my heart,

you are not alone.

It's only in solitude and in the silence where we can be reminded of all that we are.

Ruth Haley Barton says, in solitude, we find we are more than we thought, but we are also less than we thought.

We are reminded of how much our Savior loves us, yet we are less because it is solitude, in resting, that we are reminded that we are not God. We are not the god of our own little universe.

Solitude pulls us back into reality. We come face to face with all that we are. All of our neediness, our limitations, our humannness, our frailty, our need for God.

And it is there we are most loved.

Tenderly and fiercely.

It was there I heard the words I so desperately needed to hear.
The truth that has formed the bedrock to the what I am choosing to believe in the midst of change,

That I am seen and I am known and I am deeply loved.
There wasn't much more that made more sense to me than ever.
Those three things were all my heart needed to move forward that day.
Those words breathed life into my soul and gave me hope.
Gave me strength to face the rest of the day, not anxious, but excited about the new and the change that was being ushered in
because i no longer was going, or feeling like i was going, alone.

You are the God who sees me.
You have heard my prayers and promise to never leave me or forsake me.

I can ground my hope in the promise of your word.
I can choose to trust your word over my feelings. Over my circumstances.
You give me strength to trust you even when I don't see.

You are the solid rock on which I stand.
You are the God who sees me. - Written Aug. 5, 2009

Rejoice!

Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice!
Philippians 4:4

Today was a day for me to rejoice. Rejoice for several reasons and several things. Monday is my sabbath and my day to rest and be with the Lord, a day to get recharged and refreshed. Today was a day of reflecting and celebrating all that God has done in the last two and a half months. All of the change that He was aware of and knew and how He knew my life would look today, Monday October 19, but how three months ago I would have never guessed. In nearly every area of my life, God has brought sweeping changes and given and taken away so there could be new life. I have been focusing on and experiencing the grief that comes with such change, but today was a day to rejoice and be amazed at all He has done. There is a time to mourn, yet there is also a time to rejoice.

With the departure of several best friends, with moving into a new place, with new roommates, with completing support raising, with starting a new job and entering a new stage of life with beginning my life in ministry, with starting a relationship, with leading and serving in ministry, with beginning new relationships with those in our church, with my support systems changing -- through it all I have seen His hand and I can rejoice. I look at all He has done, all that He has provided and how He knew what the road would look like and He was faithful, even when I questioned it, had fears, doubted. I knew He would come through. I knew He would take care of me, sometimes it is just difficult to imagine when life looked one way for so long. He knew what it would look like, He knew all He desired to do in my life through these changes and all He desired was my trust. Trust in His unfailing love, that no matter what, His love is secure and never failing. That no matter what, He is here and He is with me, leading and guiding me every step of the way. That He will always provide, He is always faithful, His love for me never changes. No matter how rocky the terrain or how rough the desert places. He provides and never leaves our side. These were the promises that brought me through. The promise of His presence and the promise of His provision. But more than anything the promise of receiving Him. Of knowing more of Him, learning more about Him each day and how to rest in my identity of the Beloved, Abba's Child and the One immensely loved by Him. Learning to rest in the Father's affection.

Amen Father.
For You are good.

i am abba's child

“The heart of it is this: to make the Lord and his immense love for you constitutive of your personal worth. Define yourself as one radically beloved by God. God’s love for you and his choice of you constitute your worth. Accept that, and let it become the most important thing in your life.

The basis of my personal worth is not my possessions, my talents, not esteem of others, reputation . . . not kudos of appreciation from parents and kids, not applause, and everyone telling you how important you are to the place. . . . I stand anchored now in the God before whom I stand naked, this God who tells me “You are my son, my beloved one.”

- Excerpt from Abba’s Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging by Brennan Manning

No other book has been more foundational to my theology, more simple yet complex, raw and powerful, than Abba's Child. This book is the core of my identity. My identity is simply this: abba's child. This book strips us free from all the labels and the layers we wear that shape and contrive our identity, the things that have nothing to do with who we really are or what determines our worth.

John Calvin says that true Christianity exists of two parts: the knowledge of God and the knowledge of ourselves. Abba's Child solidified this within me in a way that continues to teach years after first reading this book.

Two months: Fields of grace

“To be alive is to be broken and to be broken is to stand in the need of grace.”

In the same breath we despise our brokenness we rejoice. For in that recognition of our need for God, we find grace. We find a love that alone constitutes our worth. We find a God who created within us a desire to know and be known; to love and be loved. One who teaches us our greatest lessons in the context of relationship and reveals more of Himself to us through His image bearers all around us.

Image bearers who reflect the Father’s heart, who are broken, redeemed, alive and beautiful. Unashamedly in need of grace. For grace alone has saved us.

A celebration of a God who triumphs over all. A God who is worthy to be praised. One who freely gives, freely loves and gives us the capacity to love.

It is in the context of relationship, whether it is between friends, siblings, lovers, or our relationship with God, that all that is most real is brought to the surface. Where we come to know and experience more of the fullness of life. Where we experience transcendence, a reminder that there is so much more.

It’s been an amazing two months! God continues to teach more each day about Him through being in this relationship with Ben. It is such a gift to have spent the last two months dating, one we do not take for granted.

We are simply two broken, yet redeemed people. Trying to follow Christ each day, desiring to know him more and to love him more.

Desiring to live full lives that bring glory to their King.

May you always dance in fields of grace.

The Lord is my Shepherd…

Man those words brought comfort today. The Lord is MY shepherd, the sovereign Lord, creator of heaven and earth, bigger and greater than all things, yet nearer and close as a Father, is here. Alive. Present. With love unwavering. His pursuit unrelenting. He takes care of me. Leading and guiding me in His love.

He loves and leads me onward.
He takes care of me.
Provides for my every need.
Leads, guides, protects, comforts.
He gently ushers me forward.

The Lord is my Shepherd,
He leads me besides green pastures,
He restores my soul.

The Lord is my Shepherd,
With Him, all is taken care of.
with Him, I lack no good thing.

The Lord is my Shepherd.
Amen.
