may his presence go before you // he is with you, he is for you

it's hard to find words to describe the impact of this song on my life.

it has been, without a doubt, my anthem in this quarantine season of COVID-19.

i don't have words to describe what happens to my heart when i hear it.

it ushers me into the presence of a god who is truly with me, truly for me.

a god who sees, who has been with me before in the wilderness, and is here with me now.

//

He is with you, He is for you.

my primary identity :: abba's child

my dignity as abba's child is my most coherent sense of self.
every other identity is illusion.

Two years.

The last thing I want to do is write right now. Write about this.

Yet as I was sitting in bed journaling and reading your Word, I couldn't continue to quiet that voice telling me to get up, get out the computer, and write.

Tomorrow is two years. Two years living without my best friend. That one person in the world that totally gets you, has been a constant in your life for 17 plus years, someone you never imagined having to live without.

It's also no coincidence that it's nearly been two years since I've actively posted on social media. It was Kate's death and a number of things. A number of things I've been wrestling with about social media for some time now. Kate dying was just another catalyst in needing to pull away.

To be honest with you, I've been dreading this month, this day.

There aren't days that go by without thinking about or missing her, but just as her mom so perfectly captured, there is something about knowing this day is approaching that has filled me with dread. Anxiety. Sadness. Questions. Pain.

It's not as if I miss her more in September or the days surrounding her death, it's just that this month, this day, make all I wish I could ignore painstakingly real.

Like Susan said so beautifully, I will never get "over it."

I will never forget that dreadful day and some of the words my husband said to me as I was still reeling from the news, "This is something we're going to be grieving for the rest of our lives."

The shock and the reality and the pain were more than I could bear.

I will never forget being so excited as I was getting ready for an appointment I had been wanting for most of the time we've been in California. While we moved to California for Ben to attend Fuller, before that time I had dreamed about going to Fuller and doing their counseling program before I was on staff with the campus church I worked at before we moved here, but we felt led out here for him to pursue more training and equipping in the field of international development, and exploring graduate school options for myself was something I always saw coming at some point later.

I'd wrestled with it for a while, if the things I really wanted to do would really require me to enter such a rigorous program as Fuller's Marriage and Family Therapy program, though everyone I knew in that program or others within the Fuller School of Psychology, absolutely loved it and were thriving.

I was scheduled to meet with the man everyone told me I needed to talk with if I was even remotely interested in the program, and our meeting got rescheduled/put off the first time we were supposed to meet, and now finally, the day was here.

I was enjoying the process of getting ready and was on cloud nine.

I didn't even hear Ben's phone ring amidst the music and dance party happening in the bathroom as I was getting ready.

I will never forget Ben calling to me from above the music.

What is it? Can it wait, I asked him when he asked if I could come into the living room, and then the unimaginable happened.

He looked like a ghost. All of the color was gone from his skin. I remember trying to read his expression before hearing anything he had to say, as he said I'm going to need to sit down for this.

 Now even more desperate to read what was going on, I asked frantically, what happened? Who is it? Did someone get in an accident.

And I don't even remember how it came out. I just remember the tears in his eyes and the impact of all he was saying. And him warning me that it was really bad.

Ryan just called me. It's Kate.

What, what happened? Did she get in an accident? Is she okay?

She died this morning.

WHAT, I remember screaming, WHAT? No, no, no. And I just kept shaking my head in disbelief as the tears were running down my face and everything within me was searching for how this could be true and that this must be some sort of mistake. I remember telling him over and over, "I don't believe you."

I will never forget that feeling, those moments where it felt like I was living in an alternate universe. One of those moments that I've unfortunately experienced through other tramatuic events where all of a sudden time is standing still. The world around you is still moving and you wonder how people are going about their days, how it looks seemingly "normal" out there.

She died in her sleep, he was explaining. Ryan said he found her this morning, but it was too late.

At this everything within me just collapsed. I remember crying, heading to the bathroom and just collapsing to the floor, a million thoughts racing in my head in those moments, everything from, we were just texting to the text I almost sent her this morning asking if she'd watched the finale of So You Think You Could Dance yet so we could debrief/share our critiques/opinions as we always do, to but she was going to be the first person I was going to call if I got pregnant, she's supposed be to Aunt Kate to my kids, to the fact that she never got to visit me here in California, and have our girls weekend, complete with SYTYCD, as we'd been planning and hoping to do, to what am I going to do without her. Oh my gosh, Ryan. The kids. Kate's mom and dad. Their families. All things that still make my heart ache. And the thoughts didn't stop coming.

As the news slowly settled within my soul that this was real and not a nightmare. Though I was living in a nightmare.

We left the house and went for a walk. Ryan had told Ben I could call him.

We went to the Rose Bowl where we loved going on walks, and I will never forget the few feet I kept circling as I had one of the worst phone conversations yet, talking with to a barely coherent, hysterical Ryan.

As he choked through telling me, and when I heard his voice on the phone, not even knowing what to say, sorry didn't feel even close to enough, though I kept repeating it, and he said five words for the rest of my life I will never forget, words that sent a chill down my spine and settled deep within my soul as I asked, as I'm sure everyone he spoke to that day and in the wretched days to come, what happened?

"She just never woke up."

Those words just kept repeating, kept reverberating in my soul as everything within me was just still in shock and disbelief.

I didn't even want to imagine the days to come. That day, that week, flying home, being at the funeral, it all was a blur. The most surreal I've ever experienced. A part of me kept expecting to get a call from her or a text.

They call it stages of grief, and I hated anyone that made it seem like they were so simple. There is no rhyme or reason, you don't just go through the stages and you're done, you constantly revisit them.

Anger. Denial. Shock. Sadness. And others I'm too tired to remember right now, they're never done. They're never over.

As her mom so perfectly said it as well, it's not like the pain gets easier. You just get more used to it. But the loss, her absence, all that was once in your life yet now a gaping hole remains with her being gone, it never goes away. Yet you learn and get more used to living with this dreadful companion.

--

I will have to finish this later. But I just needed to start somewhere. I just needed to post. Even though she was the only one still following/reading this blog, eventually I hope to write again and share more publicly.

This season is about stepping out of my comfort zone and I know that writing is going to be a part of that journey. So for tonight, I just needed to be obedient. To sit down and write even though what prevents me from doing it all the time is not having the words to say. There's nothing worse than staring at a blank computer screen and not having any words to fill it. Or to not be able to express all that you are feeling. But tonight was a start. And I want to do it for Kate, who was one of my biggest cheerleaders and championed my heart and the things that made it come alive (like writing once did), more than anyone. And I want to do it for the sake of my heart. Because it's good to let it out. I've experienced healing, yet this will be a wound that will never go away, yet one that will just experience various stages of healing.

And so Kate, on this dreadful anniversary, of what I still cannot believe has really been two years, I do this for you. I will never stop missing you or recover from the parts of me that felt like they died with you. I will never stop loving you or be grateful that I got to experience a friendship like ours. Can't wait to be with you again in heaven.

We have the best small group. Tonight was pour ugly Christmas sweater and white elephant party. It was so fun. And I have the best husband ever. Ben ran all over run errands for the party and our trip, he and Tanner fixed our car and we have a car that works AND heat again. My period started today which is maybe tmi but I'm so glad for once I won't be on my period and fat and bloaty during our time at home. My Christmas cards are hopefully getting fixed, I have 19 holiday stamps leftover from last year so I just need 10 more. I found our envelopes, the ones we got for our wedding thank yous because we needed them to fit a 4x6 photo. Lord, I thank you for your grace. I thank you for your love. I really want to post the pics from tonight. But I know I should go to bed. I thank you for today and the grace and strength you give me at work. Thank you that we even get to travel home to Missouri. For providing for us. For the breakthrough of my new job, for getting used to working 8-5. For going all these days without an afternoon nap. For one month today of working full time as Marketing and Communications Coordinator -- only by your grace. Jesus I thank you. I love you and I need you. Be near to me. I love you so much!!!!!!! I do y deserve all you are to me or all you've done.

Be glorified. And allow me to post the pics sometime tomorrow.

I am abba's child.

40 Days of Purpose { day 40 }

Wow, really?! Are we at the end? Well it's been nice...

Just kidding. But wow, I feel like another book is so speaking to me right now, I Will Carry You. Today's been a good day. Busy day at work and then Ben picked me up, our car may be fixed, it has heat, I wasn't feeling overwhelmed with my freelance stuff and felt I had time and space to do it. I have all my posts done for tomorrow already, I'm really trying to guard my lunch times so it can truly be a break. It's almost time for us to be home -- I feel so fortunate we're able to travel home. ThAnk you lord. I just pray for the trip and the Kromanns. Kate, I can't believe you're really gone.

Thank you Jesus, I feel safe, I feel loved, I feel encouraged, united with my husband, I'm excited about my Christmas card, I can actually get them out before we leave AND afford to send as many as I want. Lord I thank you. My heart and my soul feel at peace. I give you the rest of my days. Give me deep rest tonight. ThZnk you about the party updates going out tonight and Christine offering to bring those things.

I love you and I need you. The Angie Smith book is reinvigorating my faith.

Love always,

Wow, wow, and wow. Went to my first Cirque du Soleil tonight for my company's holiday party -- it was INCREDIBLE!!!!! Such an intense work week and day but it all went well and my hubs was the rock star of the party. I'm so glad I married him. I feel so fortunate to work at the foundation. I am thankful for so many things. And the show was amazing, I didn't want it to end, the talent was out of this WORLD. Jesus thank you for your grace. I love you so much and I need you. Rejuvenate me in the little I get up sleep in.

40 Days of Purpose { day 32 }

Last night my heart was filled with pain, tonight/today He had turned my weeping into joy. Our car still wasn't working this morning and that simple need led to a morning and an afternoon filled with grace. Katie had offered last night that she could take us to church, she ended up also taking Jeannette and was totally gracious and willing to serve us.

Ben ended up mentioning that where we were having church was near the Los Angeles County Art Museum -- wait, LACMA, the one with the lights?! And then after Katie had mentioned she had no plans for later that day, (and she was the one who was going to take our pics at the beach), I ended up saying well I did bring my camera, and both girls were excited about taking pics for us. And Jeannette had even said anytime we want something like that she is totally down. Church was amazing, the ride there was encouraging, it was just a perfect, lifegiving afternoon.

And I got my Christmas photos!! The lord only knows... I was super sad because I was having everything ride on the beach photos on the 5th because we leave on the 18th and I work till 5 everyday so it's dark when I leave. Today was like the *only* day I had left and I really didn't know if we would find anyone after church who could do it.

Oh how the lord provided-- and more than that, oh how he cares about the things on our hearts, the things he knows we deeply care about. Lord I thank you so much for your grace. And conquering a fear today in posting. Lord I thank you for how you love. Thank you for your grace. For you see and you know and you care -- about the big and little things. You are especially near. Something was set to peace in my heart and my soul. And even just being reminded of all I have, of our love, and of who I am/what I look like/my weight loss and the multitude of things that can't be put into words. I love you and I need you. Thank you again for the gift of today.

40 Days of Purpose { day 31 }

Today our car broke down on the way to our beach bonfire. We were also going to have our photos taken at the beach for Christmas cards. It's been a weekend of letting go. I feel self conscious because I sent the sign up to the girls. I want them to like me. I don't want them to feel I'm being too controlling. I'm worried now ppl won't bring something when they see everything else.

I have had a better evening than I thought I would. It was sad even leaving late because it meant we'd get there for barely enough time before it got dark. Then we weren't going to get there at all. And I'm sad about ice skating. I did get some headshots taken today by Ben so at least all the makeup wasn't a waste. I really want our pictures taken but all we have is tomorrow afternoon. I'm trying to hold things loosely. But tonight was good getting to go for a walk, stop by the Chang thing, read my one year bible and get some things done and be home with Ben. Sharing the computer so far is going better than I thought.

40 Days of Purpose { day 30 }

Tonight I'm super angry and frustrated that I broke my computer by lugging it around to work to do my stupid freelancing job. Came home and it wouldn't turn on. Ben can always fix things so I thought it was just a matter of time. But it's broken. Inoperable. And the part he needs won't come in for a week. I had all these plans for tonight, I wanted to send the spreadsheet to the girls about the party. I wanted to email the group on clarification on the white elephant game. I wanted to look up poses, look up Christmas cards because I need to have my mind made up, we take photos tomorrow but if I want nice ones, I need to order by Monday at the latest. I am so sad and angry. My stupid freelancing is not worth it. And I wasn't carrying it in its protector. It brings up feelings of when I would have my car broke down and it was something I could have avoided. I have so much on my computer that I need to access. I was having a good night too of reading my bible. But the news that my computer is out of commission that long makes me so angry, upset, and depressed and I am
The one to blame. This morning I was like, I should just leave it, when am I going to work on it with staff lunch and everything. I should've just left it. I don't get the purpose of this.

40 Days of Purpose { day 29 }

Oh lord, hear my cry. For you see and you know the longings of my heart. I give you the decision about whether to pursue the MFT program right now, I give you the uncertainty in our lives with school, and that unspoken longing you know is within my heart. I know you are here, present and active in my waiting. I ask for your interpretation to come quickly. I don't know how much longer I can wait.

I love you and I need you. Thank you for precious time with my husband today.

40 Days of Purpose { day 27 }

It's December 1st. Excuse me, WHAAT?!!

Wow. I was just looking at small group emails from 10/21, the last time we were at Carmela's. I can't believe how time flies.

Today I was reminded of the power of written word. I got an email update from my dear friend, Nia. It did so much for me heart and my soul. I long to have my voice again. Her words made my heart leap, made me feel alive in a way I haven't for a long time. Thank you Jesus for your grace and how you are moving in her life. I pray also especially in her battle with infertility; I pray for a miracle and that they would conceive this next time.

I thank you also for today. A productive, busy day and a surprise towards the end of the day, Ben asking if he could pick me up from work, I was so glad I diduhsve to walk home with all my stuff and then he took me out for a surprise. I love this man so much and I found myself, before this happened, wondering still how I got so blessed.

Thank you Jesus for your grace. I love you and I need you.

I am yours.

40 Days of Purpose { day 26 }

Just finished reading a chapter in Zheng Purpose Driven Life, on my lunch break and have to head back to work, but one thing that really stood out to me -- I hope to share more later:

"God is real, no matter what I feel."

"For God has said, 'I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.' "

Hebrews 13:5

40 Days of Purpose { day 25 }

It's been a good day. My last day of the long Thanksgiving weekend and WE PUT UP OUR CHRISTMAS TREE TONIGHT -- first of all, WHAAAT?!! And who am I?!

Lol, had a good laugh with some of my girls, I said this is what happens when we marry white boys ;))))

In all seriousness, it feels really good having it up, it really feels like Christmas season!

Night y'all.
