From Ruby Slippers: How the Soul of a Woman brings Her Home (see previous post for more info) This girl is AWESOME:
“You are a soul; you have a body. And all souls won these capacities. It is as souls that we bear the image of God and as souls we are all equal—female, male, single, widowed, married, divorced, young, old, disable, sick, healthy, or strong. Because we are all created in God’s image, we all own souls, we are all little mirrors of God. In our souls we are equally endowed from our Creator with certain capacities.
Edith Stein was a Jewish woman who converted to Catholicism, became a Carmelite nun, and was eventually killed at Auschwitz. She pointed out, “Humanity is primary, femininity is secondary.” In our humanity, men and women are equal. We are united in that we are all souls. As Stein experienced, our souls do not guarantee that we will be treated as image bearers or that we will know the depth of our soul’s capacities or even that we will allow Christ to redeem all our capacities. But it means we have souls made in God’s image, nonetheless.
Bearing the image of God is both a gift and a task. Like Dorothy who was gifted ruby slippers but still had to use them to realize their full potency, we have been given capacities in our soul. It is our task to grow the image that was placed in us. We participate by receiving God’s grace, watching him as he mends our souls, joining him by submitting all our capacities to his renovations.”
